ULI Washington Presents: Call It a Comeback Plan: Revitalizing Downtown DC

May 10th, 2023

8:00 AM – 10:00 AM Panel and Q&A
ULI HQ
2001 L ST NW Ste 200
Washington, DC 20036-4948

What is next for DC’s downtown, and what programs and plans can realistically shape DC’s post-pandemic identity and landscape? The DC government issued its “Comeback Plan,” to identify challenges and opportunities and set the District’s economic goals for the next five years. The Comeback Plan is themed around job creation, talent retention, and the addition of residential units. However, any downtown evolution will need to be realized through the coordination and collaboration of both public and private interests.

The most recent reports show office vacancy rates at 17.3 percent in DC’s central business district – 54% below pre-pandemic levels. While these numbers demonstrate a stark reality, they represent an opportunity to reimagine broad swaths of space downtown. This opportunity also presents many challenges, including market and financial conditions, remote and hybrid work schedules, less appealing older office buildings, and competing new neighborhoods. Nevertheless, the chance to redefine DC’s downtown core has tremendous potential for planning officers, developers, residents, and workers alike.

Please join ULI Washington’s Young Leaders Group for an in-depth discussion on the revitalization of Downtown DC, including its challenges and newest ideas. The centerpiece includes a panel of industry professionals representing the public and private sectors to discuss the obstacles and opportunities that lie ahead for the future of downtown. After the panel discussion, there will be time for networking with the panelists and other attendees.
